This activity is great fun for first-timers and experts alike, and is a sport that does not require immense physical strength. An average level of fitness and a calm disposition is quite enough. The ability to swim would of course be an advantage in case of an emergency situation, however it is not strictly essential as each rafter is provided with a Personal Flotation Device. This sport activity however is not suitable for those suffering from heart ailments and conditions such as epilepsy, while being under the influence of intoxicants would also be very unwise. There are a wide range and grading of rapids on some of Sri Lanka 's Rivers, more turbulent waters such as Kelani River and the Kotmale river in particular which offer 4-5 rapids to Kitulgal which rates between 2-3. Kitulgala seems to be the most popular due to it’s ideal conditions, location and facilities, approximately 80 km from the Colombo road to Nuwara Eliya via Avissawella Kitulgala became quite a famous town when it was selected for the film location for David Lean's 1957 blockbuster movie, “Bridge on the River Kwai”.
